Russian military to have dedicated special operations command ...

Dr Igor Korotchenko is Editor-in-Chief of the Natsionalnaya Oborona (or National Defence) journal:

?I opposed the GRU reform, insisting the agency must be kept intact or even strengthened as a military force in its own right. Now it?s time that Russia acquired cutting-edge special operations forces directed by a single command.??

It?s high time indeed.

The Pentagon?s Defence Intelligence Agency is stationing hundreds more undercover agents in foreign countries. Moreover, it continues to operate under SOCOM, or the Special Operations Command, which closely coordinates the DIA?s work with that of the CIA.

The German Bundeswehr includes a dedicated special operations division. Created in 2001, this unit has already proven itself a potent force.

For 70 years now, the UK has been successfully operating its famous SAS, or the Special Air Service.?

The integrated Russian special operations command will include a control centre, a special operations brigade, a parachute regiment, a squadron of helicopters and a squadron of Il-76 transport planes. In the future, it may also take in the naval commandos and the naval infantry. The entire project is on the desk of the Russian Defence Minister.
