The name Pinterest first started making rounds in May 2011. But it wasn?t until the latter part of 2011 and early 2012, that it really started making headlines. As shown in the diagram above, Pinterest is the 3rd?most popular social media platform at the moment.

The reason for its popularity is because of its ability to combine visual information with commercial impact. The key features of Pinterest are: -

  1. Pinning?? Once you create a Pinterest account, you can pin images from virtually any site, onto your pin boards.
  2. Integrated?? Pinterest accounts are integrated with Facebook. Your friends on Facebook and view your pins and comment on them.
  3. Linking?? All pins can be linked back to a website, leading to increased site traffic.
  4. Fun?? Due to its visual nature and the novel idea of pinning, users find it a fun activity.
  5. Business Pages?? After the heightened popularity of Pinterest, businesses started to take notice. Many businesses started creating accounts and pinboards. Capitalising on this opportunity, Pinterest launched business pages. It also allows businesses to convert their existing Pinterest accounts into business accounts.
  6. Keywords?? Pinterest allows you to create boards. These boards can be created with keywords that are relevant to your company. This will lead more targeted traffic back to your website.

See Australia, the official tourism promoter was one of the very first to get on board with Pinterest.

The Pinterest page of See Australia, visually curated the tourist locations of the country to maximum effect. Pinterest phenomenal success can be attributed to the following factors: -

  • It is a great story board. A series of pictures is all it takes to get your message across.
  • Pictures attract more clicks, therefore contributing to more referral traffic.

2012 was certainly and eventful one for Pinterest. With businesses now realising the power of Pinterest, the social media platform is all set to become the digital storyboard for businesses.
