Staten Island Ice Hockey Association offering free 15-session ...

CHARLESTON? -- The National Hockey League (NHL) may be closed for business due to the lockout, but the Staten Island Ice Hockey Association (SIIHA) will be back with another free program teaching youngsters the fundamentals of the game. The SIIHA has been around since the mid-1970s instructing local youngsters the sport.

There will be 15 sessions that run from Nov. 18 until April 28 and will take place Sunday mornings from 7-8 a.m. at the Staten Island Skating Pavilion in Charleston. And since the entire program is non-contact, boys and girls ages 5-to-17 are eligible to participate.

Players still need several pieces of equipment to participate, however. These include a helmet with a facemask, shin guards, elbow pads and hockey skates (not figure skates).SIIHA president John Donohue said the clinic program is broken into three stages.

The first is the skating stage which is roughly eight or nine sessions. Participants will learn to skate, learn basic skating moves and will move up when their skating ability increases.

The second session, which is four to five sessions, is the stick clinic where players learn how to shoot, how to carry the puck and move while also learning the rules of the sport.

The last session is the game clinic. Skaters will play five-on-five hockey for two minute-intervals across half the ice using cones as the goals. The purpose of the non-contact games is to give players a chance to incorporate the rules and get a feel for the game.

Donohue said one of the joys of the clinic is seeing how it pays off down the road.

?A lot of the ones who we taught when they were younger are now in the clinic as teachers and instructors,? said the Eltingville resident. ?I would say most of them, if not all, continue as they get older. Some go on to play high school hockey and some kids we originally taught played college hockey.?
