Top women's secret to success: Title IX

La Salle University

Jennifer Ngo, now a special agent for the FBI, during her playing days at La Salle University

By Eve Tahmincioglu

Jennifer Ngo, 32, a special agent for the FBI, played basketball when she was in college. Elyse Darefsky, 54, an IT manager at Cigna, was a big collegiate volleyball and basketball player. And Sarah Ann Slater, 23, who starts graduate school at the London School of Economics in the fall, was a junior tennis champ.

All three women credit sports for their achievements beyond the playing field, and studies show playing sports in your youth can indeed contribute to future career success.

?For me, it was about being part of something bigger than yourself,? said Ngo, who also played soccer growing up. ?As I got older, it helped me with my career.?

Their experiences point to how important it is for girls to have opportunities in athletics.?They also?underscore the significance of Title IX, which paved the way for more gender equity in high school and college sports, and celebrates its 40th anniversary this month.

Engaging in sports in youth can help women, and men, attain career success later in life, and many prominent women often point to that experience as a reason for their ability to climb the ladder.

Irene Rosenfeld, CEO of Kraft Foods, played everything from field hockey to basketball when she was in high school; former Alaska governor and vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin touted her sporting past as a basketball player for the Wasilla Warriors; and SEC Chairman Mary Schapiro was a lacrosse player in college.

As Title IX celebrates its 40th anniversary, hear from three women who've seen the battle from all sides.

Of her lacrosse background at Franklin & Marshall College, where she captained the first varsity team in 1977, Schapiro told Lacrosse Magazine in the March issue, that the game helped her professional life.

?Lacrosse is truly a team endeavor,? she said. ?You have work together, you have to be constantly mindful of where your teammates are, you have to be willing to be in the supporting role, you have to be able to read signals and be prepared to regroup ? all of these are important to workplace success. It also taught me to take risks.?

According to a report by research firm Catalyst published in May, 82 percent of women executives played organized sports after elementary school, and nearly 60 percent said it gave them ?a competitive edge over others in the business world.??

Learning how to compete is among the top life skills youth sport members gain from their participation, according to research from Boston University?s School of Education published last year.

There is ?a direct transfer of life skills from sport to work,? found the research titled ?Career Success and Life Skill Development Through Sports,? which was part of a doctoral thesis by Gavin Bruce Barton.

He found that besides competitiveness, sports participation also developed an individual?s work ethic, ability to handle pressure, resilience, teamwork and confidence.

Surprisingly, the study also found, that ?sport participation as a source of life skill development was cited far more frequently than family, work or education.?

And, the author added, ?Life skills developed in sport can contribute to later work success.?

You don?t have to tell Cigna?s Darefsky?s that. ?I learned more playing sports than I did in school,? she explained. ?I was an introvert, and the confidence that you gain playing sports, you can?t measure that.?

She recalled going on her first job interview at Cigna in her final year of college, right after her basketball team at Clark University had a huge win over Dartmouth. ?It gave me a sense of confidence,? she said, allowing her to nail the interview.

Slater, the recent grad who played tennis, also has seen the benefits.

Courtesy of Sarah Ann Slater

?Being a part of sports actively in my youth and throughout my adolescence really taught me a lot about discipline, time management, and taking responsibility for myself and my own successes or failures,? she said. ?Even though I am not active in competitive sports any more I?was able to successfully transfer those skills into other arenas of my life, mainly academics as a college student, and they continue to be a part of all decisions I make as I go forward with my life.?

Clearly, youth sports can be an ultimate career boon, and Title IX has opened the door for?many women to participate and then reap the future benefits, said Marilyn Strawbridge, professor of physical education at Butler University in Indianapolis, who has studied the impact of sports on women.

Despite the law?s success, however, we have a long way to go when it comes to ensuring more girls get some serious locker room time, an experience that will only help them as they go out into the work world.

?Title IX has been wonderful but there?s still parity to be reached,? stressed Strawbridge. ?Unfortunately we?re still seeing lower rates of sports participation by girls in high school and college and they still get a smaller part of the athletics dollar.?

And that?s a problem given the payoff sports engagement offers women later in their careers and in their lives overall, she pointed out.

?Women in sports are better equipped to view themselves as equals; they know how to compete and put themselves out there, and take risks for something better,? she explained. ?They live with consequence and are healthier individuals all the way around, mentally and physically.?

Lochte, Phelps advance to final of loaded 400 IM

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) ? Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps will have their first showdown on the opening night of the U.S. Olympic swimming trials.

The world's top swimmers advanced to Monday's final of the 400-meter individual medley, a loaded race that also includes the silver medalist from last year's world championships, Tyler Clary. Only the top two earn a spot on the team for London.

Lochte, the defending world champion, was the top qualifier in morning preliminaries with a time of 4 minutes, 10.66 seconds. Phelps was next fastest, cruising through his preliminary heat in 4:14.72. Clary was fourth-fastest at 4:15.88.

Phelps is the world-record holder and won the 400 IM at the last two Olympics, but he vowed to drop the grueling event after Beijing. He brought it back over the past year and said he's known "for a while" that he would be in the race at Omaha. The only stumble came beforehand, when Phelps realized he had the wrong cap. He found a plain white model that worked just fine.

"It felt fairly relaxed," said Phelps, a 14-time Olympic gold medalist who plans to retire after these games. "I'm happy."

Lochte was pleased with his effort, though he knows he'll need to go even faster to beat Phelps. He expects his rival to put in a much better time in the evening.

"That was the easiest 4:14 he's ever done, that I've seen in the whole entire world," Lochte said. "It looked really, really smooth for him. Tonight's definitely going to be a dogfight. It's not just going to be me and Michael. It's going to be Tyler Clary, too. It's definitely going to be a fight."

Brendan Hansen, who quit the sport after two straight disappointing Olympics but decided to come back for the London Games, advanced in the 100 breaststroke with the second-fastest time.

"Just get that first one under your belt ? that's what I wanted to do," said Hansen, whose time of 1:00.30 was a hundredth of a second behind lead qualifier John Criste. "It was a little rough. But I've been feeling great in the water, and I'm just going to get faster with every swim."

Also advancing to the evening semifinals was Eric Shanteau, who competed in Beijing after being diagnosed with testicular cancer.

Phelps' coach, Bob Bowman, was coy about his plans before the trials but said he's known since a March meet in Indianapolis that Phelps was going to compete in the 400 IM.

"He did one and it's really the best one he's ever done in a season," Bowman said. "He was like, 'Man, it would be a shame not to do this.' We'll know a lot more tonight whether that was a good decision."

Clary expected Phelps to scratch from the event, which would have made it much easier to qualify for a spot on the Olympic team. Now, Clary has to beat either Lochte or Phelps to compete in the 400 IM in London.

"It will definitely be a more interesting race now," Clary said, managing a slight grin. "All I can do is control myself. It doesn't matter to me who's in the heat. I'm going to go out and swim the race that I've got in my mind. I think that'll be good enough."

Lochte is eager to face Phelps as many times as possible in Omaha before they resume their rivalry in London.

"Of course, I want to win," Lochte said. "I hate not winning. I love to win. But if it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen. I'm not going to beat myself up over it."

Dana Vollmer, coming back from the disappointment of missing the Olympics four years ago, was the top qualifier in the 100 butterfly. She posted the fastest time ever in the United States (56.59), breaking a 12-year-old mark, and has her sights on Sarah Sjoestroem's world record (56.06), which was set in 2009 during the era of high-tech, rubberized suits.

"It's always in the back of my mind," said Vollmer, the defending world champion in the 100 fly. "I definitely want to do a 55."

Vollmer, who made the 2004 Olympics as a 16-year-old, battled injuries and medical problems for much of the past decade, but she's healthy now and thriving with a new diet.

"I feel better than I did at worlds," she said. "That race felt good, but I still feel like I didn't put all I have into it knowing it's just the prelims. To be at that time, it's definitely a good sign for my next swims."

Elizabeth Beisel led qualifying in the women's 400 IM at 4:35.72, nearly 4 seconds ahead of Caitlin Leverenz. Connor Jaeger was fastest in preliminaries of the men's 400 freestyle (3:48.06), with two-time Olympian Peter Vanderkaay also claiming a spot in the evening final.

Jack Mirkinson: 'The Newsroom' Premiere Recap: BP Oil Spill Covered In Aaron Sorkin's First Episode

It's in some ways appropriate that the legendary film critic Andrew Sarris passed away just as the chatter about "The Newsroom," Aaron Sorkin's new show about cable news, reached a fever pitch. Sarris was most famous for bringing the auteur theory -- which said that the director and the director's vision is the true creative centerpiece of a film-- to a wide American audience. It's largely thanks to the endurance of that theory that we're often willing to see a movie solely because of who is directing it.

Television has become a wildly auteurist medium as well. Viewers obsess over showrunners and creators (witness the recent frenzy over whether or not "Community" will ever be the same without Dan Harmon) in the same way that they do over film directors.

Sorkin, whose iron and obsessive fist over his shows is well known, is a television auteur if ever there was one. He can get an audience to follow him, for the very good reason that he's been the primary creative force behind some fantastic television in the past.

A pity, then, that the pilot of "The Newsroom" (Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on HBO) is such a letdown -- a case of auteurism gone awry.

Last week, I saw Wes Anderson's new "Moonrise Kingdom." Anderson is an auteurist's dream, someone who has a distinct world that he wants to return to over and over again. His movies aren't set in any recognizable place -- they're all in an off-kilter corner of his mind, with their own mannerisms and environments.

But it's tough when you're so unerringly committed to a particular kind of vision. Get it right and your uniqueness is thrilling. Get it wrong and you've descended into insufferable self-parody. "Moonrise Kingdom" happened to be the first Anderson film in a great while where I thought his personal tics hadn't gotten the better of him.

I cannot say the same of Sorkin with "The Newsroom." All of his dangerous creative lines have been crossed in the first episode. He's most famous for his writing, that dense, quick-fire patter that he's likened rightfully to music. Here, his characters get woefully off-key, bogged down by interminable speechifying. Sorkin always likes to throw a large helping of screwball comedy into the mix; in "The Newsroom," the attempts at comedy mostly fall flat. Mostly though, his sanctimony, always in danger of boiling over, seems to have exploded out of control. The audience drowns in it.

As the episode starts, it's the spring of 2010, and Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels) is speaking before a bunch of college kids on a panel. A famous TV journalist, he's supposed to be the sober, impartial centrist, sandwiched between a conservative and a liberal. Will makes a point of never revealing his political leanings, so he gives evasive answers to policy questions. Then, a young woman gets up and asks the panelists to say why America is "the greatest country in the world." (Which is totally something someone would ask, ever.)

Will's answer doesn't satisfy the panelist, who says he won't let him leave until he gives him a "human moment." (Which is totally something that would happen.) Then Will launches into a tirade about how, since America is "seventh in literacy" and several other statistics, he doesn't know "what the fuck [the girl is] talking about -- Yosemite?" (Which is also something that would happen, though it's a good line.)

Now, I cover the media for a living, so it's possible that I'm not willing to cut Sorkin as much slack as others. First of all: We all remember that time that Brian Williams was speaking at a college campus and some interviewer pinned him to his chair and refused to let him leave until he talked about how much he loves America, right? And then he flipped out? Yeah, I don't remember that either.

Yes, this is a TV show, and it's not supposed to reflect reality perfectly. In an earlier interview I did with Sorkin, he made this point very nicely. "At the risk of sounding too cute, it's not important to me that something be real, but it's very important to me that it feels real," he said.

He's got a problem, though: "The Newsroom" doesn't feel real. Instead, it's trapped in some weird alternate universe. The very retro opening credits show pictures of Walter Cronkite, Edward R. Murrow, David Brinkley and Dan Rather -- giving off the impression of someone with a view of the media determinedly preserved in amber.

When Will goes into his big rant, he eulogizes a time when the nation was "informed by great men -- men who were revered." Oh boy. Five minutes in, and this already?

The fallout is swift. Blaming vertigo medication, Will leaves the country (we're meant to believe he brings Erin Andrews with him). When he gets back, the staff of his show, "News Night," has all fled to another show and his boss, Charlie Skinner (Sam Waterston, very shouty, but quite a loveable rogue here), has brought back his ex-producer and ex-girlfriend MacKenzie McHale (Emily Mortimer) to run his program. This is a Very Big Deal, as is immediately made clear by Will's total freakout. We get a lot of "over my dead body" kind of back-and-forths, and hints of some ugly fallout between MacKenzie and Will.

We also meet her producing partner Jim Harper (John Gallagher Jr.). He immediately gets shoved into a love triangle with Maggie Jordan (Alison Pill, wasted in this episode), an assistant who gets bumped up to associate producer, and Don (Thomas Sadoski), Will's former executive producer. This last plot point is especially tedious; MacKenzie almost literally tells Jim, "go flirt with Maggie," and then he does. It's a transparently lazy method on Sorkin's part.

As MacKenzie, Mortimer falls victim to what The New Yorker's Emily Nussbaum has correctly identified as the show's bad habit of failing the "show don't tell" test. She comes onto the scene fresh from a rough tour as a foreign correspondent, so we get repeated references to the "two Peabodys and the scar from covering a Shiite protest in Islamabad" that she picked up along the way. "She's been to way too many funerals for a girl her age," we're told.

Mortimer also gets stuck with some of the more excruciating monologues. MacKenzie has returned with the intention of veering away from Will's flavorless pandering and making a hard-hitting news show -- a sort of hour-long version of Anderson Cooper's "Keeping Them Honest" segment -- instead. In her efforts to convince Will of this, she actually says things like, "There's nothing more important in a democracy than a well-informed electorate!" Spare me, please.

Mortimer and Daniels have decent chemistry, though they don't crackle together yet. Daniels is energetic in the role, but Will's a perpetual crank ("I'm affable!" he shouts at one point, one of the funnier lines in the episode). He's bogged down --well, everyone is, but him most of all -- by Sorkin's penchant for self-righteousness and self-pity in his characters.

MacKenzie is cast firmly in the kooky-klutzy-scatterbrained mold that almost all high-powered, seemingly brilliant female characters seem to get shoved into. Mortimer is charming, but I fear the path MacKenzie is on, and Sorkin hasn't made me care about her relationship with Will yet.

Will also sits down with Charlie to fret about this supposedly pathbreaking new turn the show might take. It's another chat that shows the bubble Sorkin appears to be living in. Anchors getting aggressive and calling people out? You must be joking!

"Anchors having an opinion isn't a new phenomenon," Charlie tells him. "Murrow had one and that was the end of McCarthy. Cronkite had one and that was the end of Vietnam."

Putting aside the dubiousness of those claims, a more relevant line would have said something like "Keith Olbermann had one..." But Sorkin seems to go back and forth on whether or not he wants to try to connect with the way the media world actually works these days. It's here where we also find out that Will is a registered --but moderate!--Republican. We'll see how that goes.

Then the show shifts. An oil rig has exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, and Don, who's still the nominal EP, doesn't want to give it much thought. But Jim senses a bigger story and, over Don's objections, the team pursues it. Of course, this is the right thing to do, as the BP scandal winds up spiraling out of control. Will suddenly morphs into a dogged, incisive questioner, flexing muscles that have supposedly long been dormant as he tangles with Halliburton representatives. The power of journalism is laid bare for all to see, etc.

Leaving aside the fact that hard-hitting investigative journalism barely ever originates from a cable news show, this part of the episode is more pleasant to watch. Sorkin's decision to use real-life events as a backdrop is risky, but the pursuit of the story does at least make the pace of the episode pick up, and I'm a sucker for reportorial zeal. There are a lot of triumphant violins, and then a few really quite stupid plot twists between Will and MacKenzie, and the pilot wraps up. Whew!

Now, I'm making it seem like this show might be irredeemable. It's not irredeemable. Sorkin is a frequently great writer. He's got a really, really good cast. It's foolish to write any of them off after one or two episodes. But, so far, I'm very worried. Nine more episodes of this? Let's hope not.

"The Newsroom" airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on HBO.

Turkey vows 'necessary' action against Syria

Map locates Latakia, Syria, near where a Turkish plane was shot down by Syria.

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? Turkey's president said Saturday his country will take "necessary," but unspecified, action against Syria, a day after Damascus said it had brought down a Turkish military plane that had entered its air space.

Abdullah Gul said that Turkey was still trying to establish the exact circumstances of the incident and whether the jet may have been brought down in Turkish territory.

The plane went down in the Mediterranean Sea about 8 miles (13 kilometers) away from the Syrian town of Latakia, Turkey said.

The incident further escalated tensions between the two neighbors, which used to be allies before the Syrian revolt began in March 2011. Turkey has become one of the strongest critics of the Syrian regime's brutal response to the country's uprising.

Turkish media say that Syrian and Turkish coast guards are conducting a joint search mission for the jet's two missing crew members on Saturday.

"No cover up is possible," the state-run Anadolu Agency quoted Gul as saying. "There is no doubt that the necessary steps will be taken."

Gul did not elaborate on what those steps would be.

"Our investigation will focus on whether the plane was brought down within our borders or not," Gul said. "Because the consequences could be quite serious, there will be no clear statement before the details (of the incident) are scrutinized," Gul said.

The Turkish president added that it was "routine" for jets flying in high-speeds to violate other countries air spaces for short periods of time.

Late Friday, Syria's state-run news agency, SANA, said the military spotted an "unidentified aerial target" that was flying at a low altitude and at a high speed.

"The Syrian anti-air defenses counteracted with anti-aircraft artillery, hitting it directly," SANA said. "The target turned out to be a Turkish military plane that entered Syrian airspace and was dealt with according to laws observed in such cases."

Know Which General Contractor to Hire for Your Home Remodel ...

When it comes to remodeling your home, we believe that your general contractor should be your best friend. ?It?s unfortunate that many homeowners have less than flattering things to say about their general contractor! ?Remember, you?re in control, and you are hiring someone whose job it is to make your life easier, not harder, whether you work with us or another firm.

With this in mind, you should know what to prepare for when you hire a general contractor in Naperville. ?Here are a few tips, advantages and what you should expect. ?The main advantage you should be seeking is their ability to effectively and efficiently manage projects.

Your general contractor should take care of the entire project regardless of the size. ?In some instances this can include hiring architects and subcontractors. ?The entire project should be handled start to finish, including the final inspection. ?That does not mean that you cannot be involved. ?However, there are literally hundreds of decisions that will need to be made in your project, and you and the contractor should decide up-front which of those (typically the most major ones) you would like to be involved in.

Taking all the project details out of your hands and reducing your stress is the main reason for hiring a general contractor. ?The GC will handle the hiring of subcontractors, scheduling their arrivals in the proper order, and keeping them on schedule, once the home improvement plans are finalized. ?This means the general contractor will take care all the details, such as which plumber in town to use, so that you don?t have to worry about it. ?You do not have to worry about how long the framing contractor is taking to frame the addition-your general contractor will be on it.

Some home renovations are simple and can be done relatively easily by the average person acting as his or her general contractor. ?However, if it is a large renovation, or something you have little experience with, a good general contractor will be a godsend. ?General contractors generally possess the knowledge and experience to get the job done efficiently and quickly. ?For larger jobs they will make sure that the subcontractors are doing the job properly and with high quality as well. ?In general, because it?s unlikely that you?ll have the time or experience to dedicate to the task, larger projects are better taken care of by a general contractor.

While general contractors can be great, it is important to find a good one. ?It can lead to a lot of headaches if you have a bad general contractor. ?Make sure they are a good fit for you by meeting with them, conducting interviews, and getting peer reviews and testimonials. ?During the interview, ask job related questions to make sure the home renovation contractor knows what is expected and how to get it done. ?Be sure to ask how they intend to pick and supervise their subcontractors.

Keeping all of these tips in mind will help you get a better general contractor for the job. ?The end goal is to finish your home improvement project with as little stress as possible which typically means two things ? on time and on budget! ?The information and knowledge that general contractors possess can make life easier for you, but that won?t mean that they are all the same quality. ?Do not be afraid to shop around or ask questions and get to know your general contractor. ?After all, it is the general contractor?s job to ensure that you are comfortable with everything. ?To learn more about general contractors, go here.

Cee Lo Looks To Please Fans Old And New With Goodie Mob Album

'Our coming together after a 12-year hiatus is somewhat of a testament to our elasticity,' Cee Lo Green tells MTV News of the Goodie Mob reunion.
By Rob Markman, with reporting by Felicia Morris

Cee Lo Green

Goodie Mob defined hip-hop's dirty south sound before such a descriptor even existed, mixing uplifting raps with bass-heavy funk. Cee Lo Green, Big Gipp, T-Mo and Khujo, along with their Dungeon Family affiliates OutKast, were largely responsible for making Atlanta rap's southern capital. The last time the Mob dropped an album as a quartet was 1999's World Party, but now they are back.

"The Goodie Mob, we definitely are reunited. And we've been working on that album really vigorously and it's coming out very well," Cee Lo Green told MTV News while at a Los Angeles taping for TV Land's new sitcom "Soul Man." "I think people are going to be very pleased. You know our core audience and also this new audience that we are aspiring to acquire."

The comeback LP, which is titled Age Against the Machine, doesn't have a release date, but in April the group gave fans their first taste of the album when they performed their new single "Fight To Win" on "The Voice." The televised performance showed a Goodie Mob quite different from what their day-one fans may remember. While singing the motivational ode, Khujo, Gipp and T-Mo donned gold battle armor and matching capes, resembling a squad of triumphant Roman soldiers. The song has been catching on, it was chosen as the official theme for the 2012 NBA Playoffs and ran on television spots throughout the two-month sporting tournament.

It's been over a decade since we've seen Goodie together, but Cee Lo says it was bound to happen. "Well, you know, it was just a matter of time, it's very faithful and we're a family," he explained. "And you know we were never separate from each other completely. So our coming together after a 12-year hiatus is somewhat of a testament to our elasticity if you will. That's what I call it."

Are you looking forward to the Goodie Mob comeback album? Let us know in the comments!

(AP) ? Neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman re-enacted the fight he had with Trayvon Martin in police video released Thursday, giving his most detailed account yet of what led him to fatally shoot the unarmed black teenager. Zimmerman claims in the video that Martin said "you're going to die" and reached for Zimmerman's gun just before the shooting.

The police recording was taken a day after the Feb. 26 shooting. The video, along with audio recordings of police interviews, was released by Zimmerman's attorney about a week before Zimmerman's second bond hearing on a second-degree murder charge, and on the heels of unflattering telephone calls capturing Zimmerman and his wife talking in code about using money collected for a defense fund to pay credit cards.

At least two lawyers who reviewed the video said Zimmerman appeared believable, but he also statements that were inconsistent or questionable.

In the video (http://apne.ws/KWquJX ), Zimmerman said he grabbed his gun from a holster on his waist before Martin could get it, and shot the 17-year-old Martin once in the chest as they fought on the ground outside townhomes in a gated community. After firing, Zimmerman said thought he missed.

"He sat up and said, 'You got me. You got me, or something like that,'" Zimmerman said.

Zimmerman said Martin had been on top of him, slamming his head against the ground and smothering his mouth and nose with his hand and arm. The tape shows two butterfly bandages on the back of Zimmerman's head and another on his nose. There are red marks on the front of his head.

"It felt like my head was going to explode," he said.

In one of the audio recordings, a detective tells Zimmerman three days after the shooting, that Martin was a "good kid, mild-mannered kid" and asks Zimmerman to explain some inconsistencies, such as why he doesn't have bruises on his body or broken ribs. The two dozen punches Zimmerman claims he took are "not quiet consistent with your injuries," detective Chris Sereno tells him.

Zimmerman claims he shot the teen in self-defense, under Florida's "stand your ground" law.

Martin's parents have said Zimmerman was the aggressor. They said Martin was walking back from a convenience store through the gated community in Sanford when Zimmerman spotted the black teenager and started following him. They claim their son was racially profiled.

Zimmerman's father is white and his mother Hispanic.

Sereno asked Zimmerman about profiling during one of the interviews.

"You know you are going to come under a lot of scrutiny for this," Sereno said. "Had this person been white, would you have felt the same way?"

"Yes," Zimmerman said.

The parents' attorney Ben Crump couldn't immediately be reached for comment. Crump said on his Twitter feed, "Everyone should review Zimmerman's objectively written statement in comparison to the 911 tapes which were previously released."

Crump did not elaborate on his post.

Orlando-area defense attorney David Hill, who has no connection to the case, said Zimmerman came across as "a reasonable guy."

"He came across as being straight-forward," Hill said after reviewing the video. "It doesn't hurt him."

Hill said the video didn't show him to be the zealous "cop-wannabe" that Martin's parents have portrayed him.

Zimmerman called police after spotting Martin walking around the neighborhood and the dispatcher told him not to follow the teen. For reasons that still aren't clear, Zimmerman kept up his pursuit, even getting out of his truck to look for him. He lost sight of Martin and was walking back to his truck when Martin confronted him, Zimmerman said.

"Do you have a problem?" Zimmerman said, quoting Martin.

If Zimmerman's account his accurate, he has a viable "stand your ground" defense, said Blaine McChesney, an Orlando defense attorney who is also not involved in the case.

Zimmerman's attorney has the option of asking for a "stand your ground" hearing in which he will present Zimmerman's account to a judge and ask that the charge be dismissed without going to trial.

McChesney said he found parts of Zimmerman's re-enactment difficult to envision, such as his account of how he was able to reach for his gun with Martin on him. Zimmerman also said he got on top of Martin and restrained him after the shooting.

"I also find it strange that Zimmerman would have attempted to use both his arms to hold Martin facedown, re-holstering his firearm, given those circumstances," McChesney said. "Once out from under Martin's alleged attack, it would have been more logical to hold Martin at gunpoint from a few feet away until police arrived."

Zimmerman's second bond hearing will be June 29. His $150,000 bond was revoked earlier this month after prosecutors said Zimmerman and his wife, Shellie, misled the court about how much money they had available for bail.

During the hearing, Shellie Zimmerman testified that they had limited funds since she was a fulltime student and Zimmerman wasn't working. Prosecutors say they had raised about $135,000 from a website set up for his legal defense at the time of the April hearing. Shellie Zimmerman was charged last week with making a false statement.

Lions speared: Kenya's human-animal conflicts grow

Kenya Wildlife Service rangers load the carcasses of six lions speared to death by residents of Oloika area in retaliation after the lions raided a boma (livestock enclosure) and ate four goats, in Kitengela, Kajiado County, Kenya, Wednesday, June 20, 2012. The Kenya Wildlife Service said the killings are a big loss to Kenya's economy, given the number of tourists who travel to Kenya to see big game. Kenyan Wildlife Service assistant director Anne Kahihia speaks to journalists in Nairobi, Kenya, Wednesday, June 20 , 2012. The Kenya Wildlife Service says residents on the outskirts of Nairobi speared to death six lions after the carnivores killed four goats from their herd. (AP) ? Crouching at dawn in the savannah's tall grass, the lions tore through the flesh of eight goats. Dogs barked, women screamed and men with the rank of warrior in this village of Maasai tribesman gathered their spears.

Kenya Wildlife Service rangers responded to the attack, but arrived without a veterinarian and no way to tranquilize the eight lions and remove them from Ilkeek-Lemedung'I, a settlement of mud and stone homes not far from the edges of Nairobi National Park.

In the end, the Maasai men ? who come from a tribe renowned for its hunting skills ? grew tired of waiting, said Charity Kingangir, whose father's goats were attacked Wednesday. The men speared the lions, killing six: two adult lionesses, two younger lions and two cubs.

The lions had killed eight goats, each worth about $60.

Wednesday's killings highlight the growing threat to Kenya's wildlife posed by the rapid expansion of its capital. A week earlier, residents from another village on Nairobi's outskirts killed a leopard that had eaten a goat. Last month, wildlife service agents shot and killed a lion moving around the Nairobi suburb of Karen. On Thursday, three lions attacked and killed three goats outside Nairobi National Park. Rangers chased the lions back to the park.

Earlier this week, the Kenya Wildlife Service sent out a public notice pleading with people who encounter wild animals "to desist from killing them."

It summed up the problem in a posting on its Facebook page: "Do animals invade human space, or do humans invade animal space? How can we find tolerance for our wild neighbors? And how can we humanely remove them when they get a bit too close?"

As Nairobi enjoys a boom in apartment and road construction, an expanding population center is putting heavy pressure on the animals, especially big cats. Nairobi National Park is the only wildlife park in the world that lies in a country's capital.

Killing lions is a crime in Kenya, but those who lose livestock to big cats frequently retaliate. About 100 lions are killed each year, and the country's lion population has dropped to about 2,000. Lions, especially ones who leave Nairobi National Park, which is not completely fenced in, are at risk. After Wednesday's killings, the park had 37 left, KWS estimates.

As Nairobi continues to grow, small towns that cropped up on its outskirts expand, fueled by the demand for low-cost housing from the city's working class.

People are settling in traditional migratory corridors that wildlife from Nairobi's park have long used to access the plains to the south around Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro, or to travel to Kenya's Maasai Mara in the country's southwest, said Peter M. Ngau, a professor in the department of urban and regional planning at the University of Nairobi.

The herbivores migrate from the park in search of pasture during the dry season and the carnivores follow, KWS official Ann Kahihia said.

"Unfortunately the carnivores do not know the difference between livestock and wild animals. Once they get livestock they just kill them," Kahihia said.

KWS Director Julius Kipngetich says the human population in the Kitengela area, where the six lions were killed, was low in the 1990s but has grown dramatically since the opening of an export processing zone there.

Even the annual migration of the wildebeests from Nairobi National Park to the Athi plains to Nairobi's east has been squeezed by human settlement, he said.

If parliament approves, the Kenyan government will start compensating people whose livestock are maimed or killed as an incentive to spare the attacking animals. KWS spokesman Paul Udoto said the government stopped compensation for wildlife attacks in 1987 after the program was abused.

Kipngetich said other ways of avoiding human-wildlife conflict is to fence parks and compensate at market rates people whose land can be used for conservation purposes.

Jackson Sikeet, who was present during Wednesday's killing of the lions, said the government should compensate the Maasai for the loss of the goats.

"Otherwise if they don't, this problem is going to continue every other time," he said.

In Minnesota we love a BBQ no matter the time of year (even in Winter, cuz we ARE that hard/crazy/bored) but Summer kicks ass for grilling every possible day you can.
I will and do grill/eat almost anything, although sometimes I just don?t want to eat meat, and sometimes I want something lighter than a big-ass meaty burger. This past weekend I did indeed want a big ass burger, but was in the mood for a change and wanted to save calories (yes, I wanted to have a drink)?I fell in love with the following meat-free Stuffed Portobello Burger recipe and had it two days in a fricken row!

Reasons portobello mushrooms rock. They?are not sissies, Jerk:

Minerals

Portobello mushroom?contain essential trace minerals including selenium, zinc and copper. Selenium functions as a coenzyme for some antioxidants and regulates thyroid hormones that contribute to regular development. Zinc plays a role in maintaining a healthy immune system, is essential for growth and helps regulate nerve impulses. Copper is part of many enzymes that facilitate energy production, iron metabolism, creation of connective tissue and healthy function of the brain and central nervous system. Portobello mushrooms are high in potassium and a source of manganese and iron.

Protein

Portobellos are a great low-calorie meat alternative. A 100-gram mushroom provides more than 3 grams of protein (you need this !), which contributes to muscle and tissue health, produces enzymes and hormones and helps transport the mushroom?s other nutrients around the body.

Calories

A grilled hamburger patty can have more than 235 calories and has saturated fat ? before the bun and condiments are added. However, a grilled portobello has around 30 calories and is also low in cholesterol and oil, which makes it a great alternative for healthy eaters that still want to eat a big ass grilled sandwich. Who you calling sissy ?

Stuffed Portobello Burger?

1/4 cup onions
1-2 tbsp balsamic vinegar ( I put this sh*t on everything)
2 portobello mushrooms
1/4 cup peppers (wish i had roasted peppers, and in that case use about an ounce or so I guess)
2-3 tbsp feta (original recipe used a slice of low fat mozzarella. Vegans can use Daiya cheese-that crap RULES http://www.daiyafoods.com/)
1 focaccia bun?(I indulged with this 180 calorie bun, and was glad because they get messy/sloppy and drip but you can use a Bread Flat or any Whole Grain bread/bun, but beware of the drip)
- napkins

Put balsamic, peppers and onion in a pan and cook on medium heat until translucent, about 4-5 minutes, then reduce to lowest heat, stirring occasionally while you grill the ?shrooms.

Preheat grill to medium, remove stems from mushrooms and brush with olive oil so they don?t stick to grill and a dash of S & P if you are so inclined.

Put shrooms on grill, stem side down for 6-7 minutes, then flip for another 4 minutes.

Top 1 mushroom with peppers, onions and cheese (I left some off to top off my burger at the end), then cover with the other mushroom, stem side down. Cook for about 2 minutes or until cheese has become ooey gooey goodness.

Slice your bun and toast it on the grill, then plop mushroom on your bun, top with with any remaining ingredients and shove it in your pie hole.

Added Yum Factors:

-I spread hummus on the bun one of the days for a change of flavor, the other day I used Grey Poupon. Use what you?d like, but be smart about it!
- Have vegetables with this sandwich. Go Greek by adding Feta!
- The original recipe also used grilled eggplant on this burger that they grilled each side for 2 minutes, but I don?t really like grilled eggplant and how in the hell would you fit that entire thing in your fricken mouth?
